An image viewer for HEIF files

HEIF Image Extensions is a Microsoft-developed utilities and tools application that enables Windows devices to open and display images saved in .HEIC or .HEIF formats. These formats are based on the High-Efficiency Image File (HEIF) standard, which uses HEVC (H.265) compression to produce smaller image files without sacrificing quality.

What is HEIF?

HEIF (High-Efficiency Image File Format) was introduced by Apple in iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra as a replacement for JPEG. It stores high-quality images at roughly half the size of JPEG files and can include advanced data such as HDR information, transparency (alpha channel), and multiple images for bursts or animations.

Most modern versions of Windows 10 (October 2018 update and later) and Windows 11 natively support HEIF files. However, to open images encoded with the HEVC codec, users may also need to install the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store.

How do you install it?

You can download and install the application directly from the Microsoft Store. Once installed, it runs in the background and integrates seamlessly with Windows Photos and File Explorer, allowing you to view HEIC or HEIF files just like any other image format.

If your HEIC or HEIF files do not open after installation, make sure you also have the HEVC Video Extensions installed, as this codec is required for many HEIF images. In case the issue persists, you can try resetting the application through the Windows Settings menu by navigating to Settings, then Apps, directly into HEIF Image Extensions, then Advanced options, and Reset. Performing this reset often resolves common compatibility or configuration issues.

Is HEIF better than JPEG?

Compared to the traditional JPEG format, HEIF offers several key advantages. It provides significantly smaller file sizes—often up to 50 percent smallerwithout compromising image quality. It also supports high dynamic range (HDR) imaging, transparency, and even image sequences, making it far more versatile. Despite these benefits, JPEG remains more widely supported across older devices and software, which means that HEIF’s full potential is still limited by compatibility.

A helpful image viewer application

In conclusion, HEIF Image Extensions offer an efficient way for Windows users to view high-quality HEIF or HEIC images with smaller file sizes and advanced features like HDR and transparency. While it surpasses JPEG in efficiency and versatility, its adoption remains limited by compatibility across older devices and software.
